And her name itself means “imagination”. Kalpana Chawla, born and brought up in the Karnal, Haryana was a passionate student since her childhood. She attended Tagore Bal Niketan school. Karnal is one of the few Indian town with flying clubs. It was called “Karnal Aviation club”. Kalpana was very attracted towards the Pushpak planes and had a joyride aboard on Pushpak. As a child, She became excited whenever she spotted planes and talk about them. As she grew into a young woman, she developed more of the passion for flying. Whenever anyone asked her what she wanted to become in life, her instant answer would be “flight engineer”. She thought flight engineer designed aero plan as nobody had explained that flight engineer actually navigate the planes. Kalpana decided her career an astronaut at early age and joined Punjab engineering college in 1978 being the first girl to get herself registered in the Astronautical engineering course.
She further moved to USA and continued her study in 1982 at Master of science degree in aerospace engineering from the university of Texas. Kalpana Chawla earned second master degree in PhD in aerospace engineering in 1988 from the University of Colardo.
She got the license of gliders, sea planes, multiengine planes and single engine planes.
On February 1, 2003, Kalpana met with a blazing end amidst the stars she had once wanted to touch. The Columbia Space Shuttle disintegrated as it entered the earth’s atmosphere killing Kalpana and six fellow astronauts
She has always been an inspiration to young scholars in India and continues to inspire students all across the world to dream big and achieve.
The memory of this amiable girl, who rose from a dusty neighborhood of Karnal to reach the Mecca of space science — the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA — continues to live in the dreams of countless others like her, who want to explore new vistas, stretch limits and live life by their own rules.
Kalpana has probably inspired an entire generation of students who want to be astronauts. Success is always inspiring and the kind of dazzling success Kalpana had was special.
